|
７７年、既成の音楽シーンに反抗するかのように、パンクが出現しました。ロン ドン・パンクについては、当時の若年層の失業問題と関連した特異な現象のように 語られがちですが、ロック・ミュージックが発展の一段階として、黒人音楽の影響 を脱したものと考えることもできます。つまり、黒人音楽が持っていたグルーブ感 や感覚的な面を、ラモーンズやピストルズ、ダムドのようなグループが、ロックを 解体して再構成する過程で排除したのです。簡単に言えば、感じる音楽から考える 音楽へ、（リズム的には横のりから縦のりへ）と、質的な転換が起こったのです。 ここを通り抜けてしまった前と後では、同じロックン・ロールを演奏しても、もは や同じ音楽には成り得ませんでした。立っている地平が変わってしまったのです。 個々のバンドが自覚を持ってやっていたとは私も思いませんが、個人の意識を越え て音楽が大きく変わり始めたのは確かです。 その結果は革新的な意味を持っていました。パンクはロックの枠組みから逸脱し、 白人にとっての最強のルーツ・ミュージックとなったのです。（ロックという表現 方法に私は興味を感じません。ロックを否定するのではなく、今の私には必要ない という意味です）ルーツ・ミュージックであるがゆえの衝動、プリミティブなエネ ルギーがそこにあります。また、これを足場として、実験音楽、民族音楽への関心 が高まっていきました。ニューウエーブの歴史は、パンクの土台なくしてはあり得 ません。もしもパンクが存在しなかったなら、ブルガリアン・ヴォイスの発掘、サ ティの再評価、エンヤなどのケルト音楽、ポーグスに見られるアイルランド音楽の 復興は、どうなっていたでしょうか。無かったとはいわないにしても、今とは違っ た形になっていたはずです。同時に、商業主義から離れた表現を通して自分たちを 取り巻く状況に対する意識が高まっていきました。ピストルズが、音楽を越えて社 会全体にインパクトを与えた最後のロック・バンドといわれる所以です。 しかし、白人のルーツ・ミュージックという側面、さらに、ミュージシャンの側 が、そうしたパンクの特質に無自覚であったことは、少なからぬ問題となって現れ ました。白人のルーツ・ミュージックという側面からは必然的に排他的な要素が発 生し、後に極右と結びつく要因になりました。また、クラッシュは政治宣伝に利用 されたグループだったと私は思っています。さらに「行き詰まった西洋文明」とい う図式は、パンクにも当てはまります。パンクは生まれた時から「行き詰まった音 楽」でした。多くのバンドが一枚のシングル、一枚のアルバムを残して消えていっ た理由がここにあると思います。走り出したはいいが、どこへ行けばいいのか、そ れからどうするかという問いが待っているのです。 ピストルズ脱退後、ジャマイカへと旅立ったジョンは「ロックでなければ何でも いい」という言葉を吐いて、ＰＩＬをスタートさせることになります。また、７９ 年以降に現れた ＵＫ−ＳＵＢＳ等の ２ｎｄ ＷＡＶＥは、パンクのスタイルを守 り続けるという、あえて困難な道を選ぶことになります。そして、パンクそのもの は、さらに戦闘的な音楽へと姿を変えていくのです。
