Japanese by Computer

Japanese by Computer

Each Japanese character is expressed in the computer by two consecutive bytes and is shown on the screen occupying two alphanumeric positions. The Japanese character set defines 6,355 Kanji (Chinese) characters for computer processing (JIS Code). In comparison, 7,445 characters (GB Code) and 13,523 characters (Big 5 code) are used in mainland China and Taiwan/Hongkong, respectively. For inputting Japanese characters,

The utility program that is used to convert the phonetic Hiragana characters to the mixed Kanji/Hiragana/Katakana text is called the Japanese Front End Processor (FEP). It is either built in the OS or bought separately by the user. Some of the typical FEPs are:

Japanese by the Internet

In the Internet, three Japanese codes are used: The Shift-JIS Code is increasingly used now, while the EUC is used in the WWW servers offered by the universities and research institutes. Your Japanese-enabled WWW browser can automatically detect which Japanese Internet code is used, or must be set to the right code after you see garbled characters on the screen.

The Jomon Language

We live after the Yayoi period of agriculture and Yayoi pottery (so named after Yayoi-cho, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, where this type of pottery was first found in 1884) that began during the third century B.C., while the Jomon period of hunting and fishing, and Jomon pottery (so named after the "Jomon" or matt-patterned pottery that Edward Morse, employed at the University of Tokyo, found at the Omori Shellmound, Tokyo, in 1882) had begun about 10,000 years ago. The language that the Jomon people spoke is unknown, and it is not known if that was Proto-Japanese. Dr. Tamotsu Koizumi, head of the Language Department of Kansai Gaidai University and formerly President of the Linguistic Society of Japan (1988-91 A.D.), in his recent book, "The Discovery of the Jomon Language" (Tokyo: Seito-sha, 1998, in Japanese), 279 pp., ISBN 4-7917-5631-2, 2,600 yen, put up a theory that the Yayoi people, which originated in Kita-Kyushu and spread to the Inland Sea and to Nara, Kyoto and Osaka, in the process of forming the Yayoi language (our Japanese language), separated the Jomon language into the eastern and western dialects, such as the Tohoku and Satsuma dialects, and that the Jomon language, i.e., the Proto-Japanese language, can be reconstructed by studying the existing Japanese dialects.

Moreover, according to Satoru Sakiyama's essay, "The Beginning of the Japanese Language Far Away" written in Japanese, the results of the recent studies in comparative linguistics show that the base of the current Japanese language was an amalgamation of the Tungusic languages in the north and the Austronesian languages in the south, in the middle of the Jomon period. We owe most of our words (tango in Japanese) to the latter, and our grammatical factors (bunpo-yoso), such as particles (joshi) and auxiliary verbs (jodoshi), to the former. "A ni ye-to ot shi bui": I have brothers/sisters.

The Ainu Language

Ainu is not a Japanese dialect, but an independent language. It is mentioned here because it was/is used mostly in the northern islands of Japan.

我々の時代は、前3世紀に始まる農耕文化と弥生土器 Yayoi pottery(東京都文京区弥生町で1884年に発見された土器から)に特徴のある弥生時代の続きであり、その前は1万年前から採集・狩猟文化と縄文土器 Jomon pottery(エドワード・モースが1882年に大森貝塚で発見した縄文のある土器 matt-patterned pottery から)の縄文時代であるが、この縄文人の言葉は現在の日本語の祖語か分かっていない。
